[Daily newspaper]

The publisher of Gisborne's only daily newspaper, The Gisborne Herald is one of only four remaining independently owned daily newspapers in New Zealand. Originally established as the Poverty Bay Herald in 1874 and renamed The Gisborne Herald in 1939, the newspaper has been an integral part of the Gisborne community for over 125 years.

The Gisborne Herald has a circulation of 8,623 and employs around 90 full time equivalent staff members in a huge range of positions, including journalists, photographers, editors, advertising sales representatives, IT experts, printers, graphic designers, drivers, clerical and accounting staff.

As a small independent newspaper, The Gisborne Herald maintains strong links with its community, a supportive working environment and the flexibility to adapt to changing market conditions, including converting from broadsheet to a more readable and practical tabloid format in 1999. The Newspaper continues to keep up to date with enormous technological advances over the past few years, particularly in newspaper production which is now fully digital. The new Goss Community Press also enables high quality full colour printing.

The newspaper is consistently a standout performer both nationally and within the pacific region as evidenced by its receipt of the 2002 PANPA Newspaper of the Year Award (Dailies and Sundays up to 20,000 circulation) and the 2001 Best Daily Newspaper (under 25,000 circulation) at the Qantas Media Awards, together with awards for marketing and technical excellence in printing.

The Gisborne Herald connects the people of the Gisborne district, providing relevant news and information, and a forum through which people are able to communicate with each other, either through letters, advertisements or public notices. Ultimately the newspaper strives to reflect the community and its people as accurately as possible and to promote the economic and social development of the district.
